Competition Win: Expansion of Paul Reinhart Elementary School, Weinfelden

30.03.2026

The project to expand the Paul Reinhart Elementary School in Weinfelden stands out for its clean, wood-based design, high flexibility, and respectful approach to the existing structure. At its core are an efficient structural concept, modular designs, and a construction method tailored to the materials used, ensuring long-term usability.

Competition for the Expansion and Renovation of the Paul Reinhart Elementary School Complex: «Transformation of a 1960s Elementary School»

Floor Plan for the Pauli & Paulina Competition Project

By winning the competition for the expansion of the Paul Reinhart Elementary School, Timbatec Holzbauingenieure Schweiz AG is strengthening its expertise in modern timber construction for educational buildings. The project focuses on a material-appropriate, cost-effective design that allows for flexibility, durability, and easy modifications during operation. «Pauli and Paulina» was designed by Alma Maki Architekten GmbH, Basel (Tom Knopf), in collaboration with Antje Gamert – Architektur und Landschaft GmbH and WMM Ingenieure AG.

Continuing to develop existing properties as a key to success

Alma Maki won the competition with a concept centered on the consistent expansion of the existing structure. Rather than constructing eye-catching new buildings, approximately 20% of the space will be reorganized and used more efficiently, supplemented by targeted interventions only where functionally necessary. The approach of viewing the existing structure as a resource to be further developed was decisive.

Equally impressive were the careful analysis and deep understanding of the existing structures. The interdisciplinary team combined architectural, craftsmanship, and planning expertise and, over the course of several months, developed a coherent solution that minimizes implementation risks.

Floor plans

From wood and wood construction expertise to fire safety

The structural system is based on a hybrid timber frame construction supplemented by wall panels. This combination allows for large spans, open floor plans, and diverse visual connections. The facades alternate between closed timber frame elements and transparent window surfaces. Columns integrated into the window facade follow a clear grid, uniting structure and architecture into a precise overall design.

The alternation of load-bearing walls and isolated columns inside creates a high degree of flexibility for classrooms, group spaces, and communal areas. A central atrium with a radial system of columns and beams ensures ample natural light and facilitates orientation.

Materialization and Construction: The Pauli & Paulina Project

The floor slabs are designed as box-girder elements and, in addition to their load-bearing function, also provide sound insulation and accommodate building services. Services can be integrated without compromising the structure. At the same time, the floor slabs serve as horizontal bracing and dissipate forces from wind and earthquakes.

Fire protection is an integral part of the design: The timber structure meets requirements for fire resistance, clearly organized escape routes, and enclosed constructions in the stairwells. Fire protection screens prevent fire from spreading across the facade.

The construction allows for a high degree of prefabrication, short construction times, and precise execution. It supports efficient use of materials and facilitates demolition. The result is a robust, adaptable school building that meets the demands of modern learning methods and can be further developed over the long term.
